Scientists from several universities in the UK involved in the project Stonehenge Riverside, believe that Stonehenge is a monument to unite the country after a long conflict between the western and eastern parts of Britain.

The stones symbolize the different communities, so they were brought from different places: one in the west of Wales, the other - from the south of England. Experts from the universities of Manchester, Bournemouth, Sheffield, Southampton and University College London studied Stonehenge, its surroundings and the socio-economic situation in the region in the era of the construction of this monument.

Mike Parker Pearson of Sheffield said that the construction of Stonehenge occurred while establishing a common culture on the island. And in the Orkney Islands, and on the south coast of Britain at this time begin to build the same house, the same pottery created, use the same materials. Regionalism past centuries came to an end. In addition, the scientist points out that Stonehenge - this is a very large event, which should have been taken by thousands of people. According to researchers, working together on this monument is a manifestation of the unity of the country.

Scientists believe that Stonehenge was built in a place that even before that had a special meaning for the ancient Britons. The researchers found that the main avenue of Stonehenge, which is focused on the solstice, forms a natural landscape. A feeling that nature itself has created axis indicating their ends at sunrise and sunset at the summer and winter solstices. Pearson notes that the ancient people probably saw this location as the center of the world. It is for this reason, in addition to the area of Stonehenge built another eight monuments that is unique to the British case.

According to experts, during construction, and active use of the monument unite Britain played a key role winter solstice. After analyzing the teeth of pigs, which were a treat to the prehistoric feasts at Durrington Walls, located not far from Stonehenge, scientists have concluded that in the winter there was going to a lot more people. In addition, most of the monuments near Stonehenge focused on sunset and sunrise on the day of the winter solstice.

The participants of the project immediately rejected the hypothesis that exposure to foreign construction workers, as all the elements that have been used at Stonehenge, were also found in other regions of the UK, particularly in Scotland and Wales. For several centuries, the island’s population lived in isolation from Europe. Stonehenge is the latest creation of this culture before from the continent to the region entered the new technologies of metal processing and tire.
