Researchers have found a way to observe the formation of words in the human brain. This scientific breakthrough could enable people with disabilities to regain the power of speech. Since the electrodes, they discovered a brain region which formed about 40 English speech sounds. They discovered that each of these sounds has its own signal encoding. In the future, it will be read by a computer program what people have to say. That is to read their thoughts.
The study of mind reading was conducted by a team from the center of innovative technologies of neurobiology at Washington University. The team led by Eric Leutardt. They studied four people who suffered from a severe form of epilepsy. Each of them is implanted in the head of 64 electrodes. Originally, the purpose of the study was an attempt to find the cause of epilepsy, but also Leutardt watched areas of the brain in which it is formed. The volunteers were asked to utter four sounds: ’y’, ’a’, ’e’, ’u’.
At the same time were monitored area and Wernicke’s center Brock, in which it is formed. Scientists were able to isolate four electrical signal corresponding to the formation of the four sounds. Although only four sound enough to form words, this study indicated the direction for future research in this area. Leutardt said: "This study shows that the brain - it’s not a black box, as previously thought."
"I’m not ready to say that I can read minds. But the data show that it is possible in principle." The study found that the brain generates a signal, even when a person thinks about the sounds, not saying them out loud, but they are significantly different from those formed during the speech. In the future, it will allow people with physical disabilities, to speak again. The study was published in the journal Journal of Neural Engineering.
