Japanese scientists have managed to get out of a biodegradable thermoplastic single-celled algae (Euglena green). Unlike other biodegradable polylactide-resistant plastic, the new material can withstand twice as high temperature - 120 degrees.
In the creation of a new heat-resistant bioplastic involved scientists from the University of Miyazaki, National Institute of Industrial Science and Technology, as well as specialists NEC - one of Japan’s largest telecommunications companies.
The main component of the new thermoplastic is paramilon. It is kind of polysaccharides that accumulate only in the cells of plants Division Euglenophyta, particularly in green Euglena, which has been involved in the production. The structure consists of bioplastics and fatty acids extracted from cashew nut shell.
In the future, the development of effective and low-cost production technology durable biodegradable thermoplastic will eliminate the use of plastic all over the world made from oil components. Plastic decomposes oil about a hundred years, in connection with which a number of European countries have already imposed strict limits on the use of plastic bags. This encourages researchers to look for new ways to produce environmentally-friendly replacement of the material. Currently, biodegradable polymers are widely used in the manufacture of disposable cutlery, cookware, and food packaging.
