The specialists of the Polytechnic University of Virginia hit its latest development, providing public robotic jellyfish Cairo. It was created in the image of this one of the world’s largest jellyfish - hairy cyan (Cyanea capillata), with a diameter of about 2.5 meters bells.
Robot created by scientists from the United States, reaching 1.7 meters in diameter, and its weight is as much as 77 pounds, which is much more than a real jellyfish. The principle of moving it in the water is the same as that of the present scalp cyano. It moves through the metal skeleton, cleverly hidden under a thick silicone coating.
Engineers try using nickel-metal hydride battery, placed within and capable of charging the robot during its location in the body of water, to the maximum autonomous Cairo. In the future, expect the creators, the robot can be jellyfish in the sea without recharging and maintenance for a few days, months or even years. Especially appealing to copy is the principle of movement of jellyfish, as they are quite economical expend their energy.
