Japan plans to use a giant fishing net to catch debris


Giant network, the size of several kilometers, was created as a joint project of Japanese space agency, and 100-year-old company manufacturing fishing nets. The project aims to help collect debris from Earth orbit.

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA (born Japan Aerospace eXploration Agency) and the company Nitto Seimo Co, set a goal to once and for all solve the growing problem of litter near-Earth space debris and garbage that threaten the integrity and safety of the spacecraft and satellites.

In the past year, in the United States estimated that as a result of such contamination space satellites in the event of a collision, there will be "uncontrolled chain reaction" capable of destroying the communications network of the Earth.

The Japanese plan to launch a satellite into space, and attached to it a thin metal net area of several kilometers. The network then is released to float freely on the Earth’s orbit, capturing all the trash on the way.

In the course of his voyage Refuse, the network will acquire an electric charge and, ultimately, will be attracted back to the earth magnetic field. And the network, and its contents will burn, entering the atmosphere.

The network will remain in orbit for several weeks, collecting as much debris, and then will be sent to the next network.

In the near-Earth space circulates ten million debris. This problem has long been a matter of concern, as it poses a potential threat of collision with appliances.

Scientists say that only one collision between two satellites or large pieces of debris could create thousands of pieces, each of which can damage other satellites.
