Japanese construction company Obayashi announced its intention to create a space elevator to take passengers to the station, located at a distance of one-tenth of the distance to the Moon. Elevator cables will consist of sverhkrepkih carbon nanotubes. Obayashi Tokyo-based company said that the launch date of the project is scheduled for 2050.
The total length of the cable will reach 96,000 kilometers, or about a quarter of the distance to the Moon. One end of the cable will be connected to the space port on the bottom of the ocean, and the other with a counterweight in space.
Lift speed of 200 kilometers per hour, respectively, then to get to the station, will take about a week. It will be equipped with a linear motor and can deliver up to 30 people at a time. The station will be at the top of the accommodation and laboratory facilities. Solar panels at the station will generate electricity which is transmitted to Earth.
NASA is also exploring the possibility of a space elevator, in 2009, awarding $ 900 thousand company LaserMotive, for the development of robotic laser lift. Space elevators can significantly reduce the cost of delivering cargo into space, compared with rocket launches, although the initial investment in infrastructure will be high, and the technological hurdles are huge.
"At the moment we can not estimate the cost of the project," - said the Yomiuri Shimbun of Obayashi. "But we will try to steadily move forward to make this vision a reality."
