NASA in search of magnetic portals near the Earth


Researchers from the University of Iowa, sponsored by NASA, have developed a method to identify the hidden magnetic portals around the Earth. Using this technique, the spacecraft will be able to detect these gateways connecting the Sun and the planet. It is of great importance, since such portals can cause a major disaster if the open door to the powerful sunlight.

In the science fiction books and films such magnetic portals usually connected parallel worlds, planets, star systems. Portals available in the magnetic field of our planet, a bit easier, but still very important to the future of the Earth.

These portals scientists call the electron diffusion regions or X-points. This is the land of the space in which the earth’s magnetic field is connected with the sun. The result is a passage from the Earth to the sun’s atmosphere, the length of which about 150 million km.

On the basis of observations and probes ESA Cluster spacecraft THEMIS, the researchers found that these magnetic portals ten times per day open and close. They are usually located in the tens of thousands of kilometers away from the world where its magnetic field meets the solar wind.

Most of the portals is relatively small and there is a short-lived, but some can reach enormous sizes and for a long time to pass the charged particles that are bypassing the Earth’s protective magnetic shield, lead to heating of the atmosphere and geomagnetic storms.

Two years later, NASA is going to launch the mission MMS. Equipped with detectors of magnetic fields and energetic particles devices will follow the magnetic field around the Earth and observe the formation and behavior of the magnetic portals.

Find such portals is very difficult, but the researchers hope that this problem will afford MMS missions and the data will help them find the answers to a lot of questions about potentially dangerous for the Earth magnetic corridors. According to scientists, in the future, perhaps to create a model of the magnetic portals, which allows you to quickly find them and predict the consequences of their impact on the climate on our planet.
